Benedictine University's Emma Roberts and Concordia University Chicago's Jessica Wilson have been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team for NCAA Division III, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Tuesday.
Roberts moved up to the second team this year after being named to the third team last year, while Wilson joins Roberts on the second team in her first year making the list.
A distance specialist, Roberts is a math major who has earned a 4.0 GPA over the last three years. The junior won a second consecutive Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference individual cross country title last fall, helping Benedictine finish second. Winning the title earned Roberts - Benedictine's first NACC champion in cross country - a second straight NACC Runner of the Year award. The Sandwich, Illinois native was named All-Region this year and qualified for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship in 2017, finishing 52nd. Roberts, who won six of eight weekly awards from the conference in cross country this year, set numerous records on the track as well and won outdoor conference titles in the 800 and 1,500 after claiming an indoor championship in the mile. She also ran a leg of the school-record-setting distance medley, which also won the championship.
"I am so proud of Emma," said head coach Paul Zavala. "She is a perfect example of what we want our program to represent. Earning this honor two years in a row shows the dedication and hard work that she puts in every single day on and off the course."
Wilson was a national qualifier in the hammer throw at the 2018 and 2019 outdoor national championships, and she earned All-American honors this year with a sixth-place finish after a throw of 168 feet, 9 inches. Earlier in the season, Wilson shattered the CUC record in the hammer with her winning throw of 183-0 a the NACC Outdoor Championships. The mark led NCAA Division III at the time. Wilson was named Co-Field Athlete of the Meet for winning the NACC titles in both the hammer and discus throws. A music major, she graduated CUC summa cum laude in May.
Concordia Chicago track and field head coach Phil Kopinski stated, "It was wonderful to see Jessica close out her career this way. Not only was she honored as a top athlete in our sport at the nationals, now she is recognized as one of the top student-athletes as well. As in everything she does, Jessica worked tremendously hard in her studies, and it's great to see her recognized among such an elite group of student-athletes, including our past CUC student-athletes that have achieved this honor."
Wilson becomes the 10th Cougar student-athlete to earn national recognition from the organization and the first since Tim Bahr (football, 2016).
The Google Cloud Academic All-American® Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
In order to be eligible for All-American honors, Roberts and Wilson earned First Team Academic All-District® honors earlier this year.
